Demystifying the Exams

TEF Canada — 15 minutes

  • • Section A (≈5 min): ask questions about an announcement — a job ad, an activity, a service.
  • • Section B (≈10 min): convince the examiner, who plays a friend or colleague and raises objections.

TCF Canada — 12 minutes, 3 tasks

  • • Task 1 (≈2 min): a guided interview about you, your work, your family.
  • • Task 2 (≈5.5 min): an interaction task — asking someone like a pharmacist or landlord for information.
  • • Task 3 (≈4.5 min, after 2 min prep): giving and defending an opinion.

No. It is our own estimate, generated after a practice scenario, so you know roughly where you stand. It is not issued by TEF Canada, TCF Canada, or any government body, and it does not replace sitting the real exam.

What does the TEF Canada oral exam actually ask?

TEF Canada speaking runs about 15 minutes with one examiner: Section A (about 5 minutes) asks you to get information about an announcement by asking questions; Section B (about 10 minutes) asks you to convince the examiner, who plays a friend or colleague and raises objections.

What does the TCF Canada oral exam actually ask?

TCF Canada speaking runs about 12 minutes across three tasks: a guided interview (about 2 minutes), an interaction task where you ask for information (about 5.5 minutes), and an opinion task with 2 minutes of preparation (about 4.5 minutes).

Does this replace Francisation Québec or an exam prep course?

No. Francisation Québec courses are free and are a strong foundation. This is daily oral practice designed to run alongside a course, not instead of one.

Do I need to already speak French to start?
